Steve Dickinson, Central Virginia Legal Aid Society

Steve Dickinson has spent his entire career as a lawyer, representing his clients for free. He grew up in New Hampshire and Maine and is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston Maine and Washington & Lee School of Law in Lexington, Virginia. Since he graduated from Washington & Lee School of Law in 1991, he has worked in a variety of legal aid programs, serving low-income people in civil cases. He spent most of the last 29 years in Petersburg, Virginia.

First working at Southside Virginia Legal Services and then at the Legal Aid Justice Center. In between work he and his wife raised two boys and ran a small British pub in Old Town Petersburg. In 2010 he became the Executive Director of Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (or CVLAS), and eventually moved to Richmond. At CVLAS, Steve helped transform its pro bono referral system with the creation of the first in the nation cloud-based application called JusticeServer. In the last 7 years, Steve has also helped triple the capacity of CVLAS by increasing the number of lawyers on staff from 8 to 25.
