Hal Waller, Head of School of the Riverside school
This is Hal Waller’s sixth year as the Head of School at Riverside School, a K-8 private school located in Bon Air, Virginia, that serves 91 students with dyslexia.
For almost 50 years, Riverside School has used the Orton-Gillingham Approach to teach dyslexic students how to read, write, and achieve their highest potential. Riverside students typically stay at the school for 3-4 years, and some families relocate to the Richmond area so that their children can attend Riverside.
Riverside recently purchased the adjoining campus of the former St. Michael’s School, which has allowed for enrollment growth and additional classroom, gymnasium, and playing field space. Before coming to Riverside, Hal served as the Lower School Principal at the Veritas School in Northside. Before entering school administration, Hal was a high school English teacher and department chair at the Maggie Walker Governor’s School, in addition to teaching overseas in Athens, Berlin, and London.
Hal has degrees from the University of Virginia and Washington & Lee, and he is a graduate of Woodberry Forest School. Hal and his wife Allyson live with their two sons in Woodland Heights.
